Here, you'll find just some of the projects ERC had the privilege to work on for clients, from computers, phones, and game consoles to a few random items thrown into the mix. This photo gallery gives you an insight into what East Rand Computers has worked on and a bit of a backstory summary of each job, what the issues were, and how we went about accomplishing the tasks at hand.

'07 Dell Desktop PC (Cover Image) - East Rand Computers

2007 Dell Desktop Computer

It may be old, but it's still pretty functional, especially for light tasks such as browsing the internet, checking emails, word processing, etc. It came in for a service, RAM and CPU upgrades, a new hard drive and a clean installation of Windows 10 Pro.

LG Office Monitor

This LG monitor would not power on due to bulging and leaking capacitors. With the old capacitors removed and the new capacitors soldered in place, the monitor came straight back to life.

Acer Aspire E 15 Laptop (Cover Photo)

Acer Aspire E 15 Laptop

This Acer laptop required a service and to replace the dead mechanical Hard Disk Drive (HDD) with a Solid-State Drive (SSD). It was overheating when doing moderate tasks due to the clogged heat sink and old dried thermal paste.

Samsung Shop Monitor

This computer monitor is used as a display for a cash register in a grocery store. It would turn on and off when wiggling the power cable. Upon disassembly, all the solder joints for the power connector had cracked. Resoldered all the pins, and it's back in business!

2 GB DDR2 Desktop Memory (Cover Photo)

2 GB DDR2 Desktop Memory

Given how expensive DDR2 RAM is now, it made sense to fix this 2 GB desktop DDR2 memory module. The EEPROM module was bumped when the DIMM was removed from the PC case and also tore off one of the pads/traces.

Apple TV HD

There's a simple solution to fixing this Apple TV, but no replacement parts are available, original or third party. This Apple TV HD (4th Gen) is completely dead and does not turn on due to a faulty power management IC. As such, it's unrepairable.

Game Consoles

PS4 Phat & Red DS4 Controller (Cover Photo)

PS4 Phat & Red DualShock 4 Controller

The DualShock controllers would only work a few centimetres away from the console as the wireless Bluetooth antenna had sustained damage from a fall and broke off the coaxial antenna wire. With the antenna repaired, the rest of the console was also serviced, and the controller received a well-deserved scrub-down.

The common joystick "stick drift" that all gaming console controllers develop over time, the PS5 is no stranger to it, despite being the latest and greatest money can buy. This PS5 controller came in for such repairs and is now stick-drift-free!

The client had spilt liquid on their PSP, causing it not to power on. Luckily, it only blew the main power fuse with no further damage. After replacing the fuse, the client asked if the original charging jack could be replaced with a universal USB Type-C port. Challenge accepted!

PS5 Controller Hall Effect

The permanent solution to controller stick drift on a PS5 DualSense controller is to replace the factory analogs with Hall Effect sensors. Doing so ensures your PS5 controller will never have stick drift issues again!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1

A broken USB charging port left this Samsung Galaxy tablet disabled. The charging port had completely broken off, leaving the pins to dangle in the wind. Once the battery had fully depleted, one could not do anything until the charging port was replaced with a new one.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra

The rear camera housing glass lens cracked, exposing the camera lenses to dirt and debris, and as a result of the cracked and broken glass, any photos taken were terrible. Brand new replacement lens installed and a glass lens protector to top it off.

A cracked screen and a battery that would only last about an hour or so before needing to be charged again. This iPhone 7 received its long-overdue screen and battery replacement.
